Milton Keynes / Stony Stratford - September 2017

I visited Milton Keynes thanks to an invitation from my cousin who lived there. It's funny that we had a higher chance of meeting in the UK than in Poland because we live over 400km away. If not for that, I probably woulnt't have visited Milton Keynes. But I am glad I did, it was the most peculiar place in the UK i have visited because it is utterly different - it is relatively modern.

By modern I mean raised up from scrath in the sixties. As London become overcrowded the British government decided to build a new city to take over some of its population. Three small villages were connected by a network of peripendicular motorways with calm neighbourhoods hidden between them - Milton Keynes was born.

It was the first english city I saw that was adjusted for cars, not for pedestrians. Good luck moving around only by walking or public transport... Basically in all old cities there are no parking spots, the streets are so narrow with buildings located very close to each other and Milton Keynes was the exact opposite of that. It was so bizzare, we were driving these motorways to get from one part of the city to another and I didn't think I was going throgh the city centre at all. The motorwaysways are seperated from the districts with rows of large trees just like on fast inter-city roads.

To be frank I didn't take that much photos of the modern part, as you can see I started with an old church we stumbled upon. Let's have a walk around MK then. Doesn't look that modern, does it? That is an incredible thing about the brit's architecture, everything is so consistent and cultivates the traditional styles.

It has lots of parks full of trees and vast green spaces that burst into life in the summer with all kinds of festivals. It is monumental in some way too.

But I was taken to one of the villages that were here before Milton Keynes, it was called Stony Stratford. Officially it is a part of MK but its habitants still do not identify with it. For them it is Stony Stratford, period. It is an example of a small provincial town with undeniable charm.
