Esbjerg/Fanø - March 2017

ESBJERG

I have seen quite a lot of east coast of Denmark, right? It was about time to visit the west coast then! After some research of good-for-a-day-trip west coast destinations I have chosen to visit the city of Esbjerg which is the fifth biggest city in Denmark. It is located on the southern part of Jutland peninsula, near a small island called Fanø. We went there in a largest yet group of seven people.

To be perfectly honest we did not spend much time in Esbjerg. We took a bus and traveled to the seaside with the famous statues "MEN AT SEA". They were kind of amusing, looking so majestic and serious from the distance they actually had funny facial expressions when we had a closer look.

We had a quick look at the city centre and went to the ferry that would take us to the island.

NORDBY

Now Nordby was an unreal little town. It already looked amazing seen from the ferry, but as we approached it from the distance we did not know how uncanny it was deeper inside.

As I did my research before coming to Fanø, I have learned that there is a population of seals dwelling on the island. I shared that information with my friends and we were exceptionally eager to see the animals. We were so not dissapointed - we didn't even need to leave the harbour to see them chilling in the water and completely ignoring all the tourist gasping and yelling at their sight.

Now, about Nordby... Apparently the time has stopped in this village. All the buildings in it's boundries were tiny, colourful and extremely adorable. All of them looked old but renovated and perfectly maintained. Narrow, irregular streets were separated from the habitants' property with white wooden fences. Lots of cats running around. Kids playing together on the streets.

I noticed lots of random objects that would indicate that this wasn't a museum, but actual dwellings of actual living people. Some of the cottages looked like in fairy tales and some like Hobbit houses in the Shire. The streets were strangely empty though, even for a sunday afternoon off the tourist season.

SONDERHO

Sonderhø is the second village we visited and it was located in the south of Fanø. Initially we planned to rent bikes and to drive from one village to another, however the bike rental was closed off and we had to take a bus. It's a pity because Fanø seemed a perfect destination for cycling trips...

It had a slightly different character than Nordby, though. The centre was rather similar but as we walked away in the direction of south-west the appearance of cottages was changing into more minimalistic and plain designs. They were also situated in much larger distances from one another.

Of all of this I reckon I was most charmed by the landscape. Grasslands in the shade of vivid yellowish-greens with tiny cottages popping up here and there from inbetween the hills were just so peaceful and aesthetically pleasing. It gave an impression of vast spaces, specially if from the top of the highest hills one could see the sea from three sides.
