When flying to Milan with budget airlines you are most likely to land in Bergamo. Instead of rushing straight over to Lombardy's capital, it's good to take some time to appreciate Bergamo itself. It is a true gem that many people overlook in their Milan excursions, and it's so easy to reach!
It is situated about 40km north from Milan, on a tall hill (at the cusp of the Alps). At first you would probably arrive in the modern centre with coach and train terminals and stuff, from where you can take a bus and a special tram to the old town above.
The tram, which is a very vintage wagon, works as a mean of public transport.
Bergamo didn't welcome us with pleasant weather. It was raining the whole day long, and as we were very tired after our ridiculously-early-morning flight we just strolled the streets under our umbrellas without any plan. But even in these repelling conditions we were really pleased with the sights. It reminded me of some ancient Tuscan cities I have been to, like Volterra.
In nice weather conditions from many terraces a splendid panorama can be seen. However... In our case we could se really pretty clouds. Still, there was something appealing in this gloom as well.
