Puerto Escondido - September 2021

After leaving Ciudad de Mexico and spending a couple of days on intensive sightseeing we flew to Puerto Escondido for a quick beach getaway.

Puerto Escondido is a town in the state of Oaxaca, on the coast of the Pacific Ocean. It literally translates as The Hidden Port. Luckily, despite its relatively small size it has an airport and it is connected by numerous bus routes within the state. This is a very popular holiday destination among mexicans, surfers and backpackers who are looking for uncanny places that avoid mass tourism. We didn't spend much time in the city centre itself, our hostel was closer to Punta Zicatela which is the true surfing center by the beach.

See, Punta Zicatela had this amazing vibe about it, and it is basically because it attracts a different type of tourist than Cancun or Playa Del Carmen. It was like a couple of buildings hidden in a rainforest, connected by dirt roads and a few paved ones, where hostels stood next to goat farms or local houses. All the venues had this backpacker-boho-hipster-hippie atmosphere of slow living and spiritual wellness, yoga, healthy eating and people were moving around on scoters that had special grips for surfboards.  No luxury suites, everything casual.

Speaking of surfing, this is a fantastic surfing spot that attracts thousands of surfers. We came to Mexico during the rainy season and it was by far mostly feelable here on the Pacific Coast, the entire first day it was raining and the waves were 3-6 meters high. We were later told that this was a peak seasons regarding  wave strength in this area. It didn't stop us from getting a surfing lesson on a smaller and safer bay, which we enjoyed tremendously!
We stayed in One Love Hostel, a fantastic accomodation with the rooms located in bungallows in a patio covered in tropical plants. We really felt as if we were staying in the middle of the jungle, laying in a hammock on the porch and listening to the oceanic waves crashing in the distance. Best feeling ever.

Heavy rain didn't stop us to go out and explore, we went to the beach and swam in the ocean in the rain.

I love the Pacific. It is the second time I've seen it, but the first time in Chile it was very cold and I didn't even manage to get into the water above the waist. Here the water had a temperature of 27 degrees or so, it was delightful to be in in. The biggest fun was to jump over the waves and hope that they won't swoop you of your feet, they were very strong even right by the shore.

It was possible to rent deck chairs and an umbrella in an oceanside restaurant, what we did. We also enjoyed a delicious seafood ceviche and aperol spritz.

It was hot and very humid so the rainfall was not unplesant at all.

The next day in the morning the weather improved a lot and we took our surfing lesson.

Then we had a walk to Punta Zicatela to eat lunch and chill at the beach, and to hunt good photos of surfers riding their waves. You can see how colourful this place is!

We still had a few hours to kill before out evening bus heading to Oaxaca, so we decided to off the beaten track and walk through local neighbourhoods to the place where river Colotepec fell into the Pacific. It just looked cool on the map.

So we walked, for 7km, through local neighbourhoods, fields, hills and crocodile territory. It just sort of... happened.

In the evening we took our last glance at the ocean in Puerto Escondido centre, this was the first time we visited this area during our stay. At least we were rewarded with nice sunset colours.
