Lake Bosomtwe - July 2019

Lake Bosomtwe is a nearly perfectly-round lake near the city of Kumasi, in Ashanti region in Ghana. I haven't heard about it before we were suggested a trip there during my stay in Kumasi, and this is strange because this lake is exceptionally picturesque and definitely worth a visit.

It is the biggest natural lake in the country - with 10,5km diameter. Lake Volta in the east is the biggest, but it's manmade. Bosomtwe was most likely an impact crater, a result of a meteorite hitting the earth. On it's shores there are over 30 villages. However, we started off from Kumasi - the biggest city of Ashanti region and the second largest one in Ghana, I haven't really seen much of it, so I won't make a separate post about it - it looked very similar to Cape Coast and Accra.

The road to Lake Bosomtwe from Kumasi was particularily interesting. It was a broad highway, but with no asphalt surface - just red soil. So, with every vehicle driving through literal tons of red dust billowed through the air and settled on everything that it touched. All the venues, cars and trees by the road were covered in red dust looking absolutely stunning.

Bosomtwe literally means God's Antilope. There was a legend about a hunter that chased an injured antilope and the animal jumped into a pond. The water is said to have saved the antelope's life, the hunter never killed it but instead he settled by the lake and started to fish instead of hunting. This is the origin of the name.
