The North of Ghana is an absolutely different adventure than what that I have encountered in the south. This trip was mostly about appreciating nature and tradition. It was essentially appealing because I had a chance to drive deeper into Africa instead of staying close to the Atlantic coast. Fauna and Flora was something else, much closer to an evergreen savannah than a palmtree paradise.
We spent four days in the bus, driving cross-country from Kumasi up to Paga village that's basically on the Burkina Faso border. I drove from Cape Coast a day earlier, so I can frankly say that I have covered the whole length of the country by bus. Approximately 800 kilometers. We visited many different places on the route and we stayed overnight in Damongo village and Tamale. Once again, many photos were taken from the bus, because with my childish curiosity I couldn't stop looking out the window with the camera on stand-by lying on my lap - just in case I saw something interesting.
Lake Bosomtwe is a nearly perfectly-round lake near the city of Kumasi, in Ashanti region in Ghana. I haven't heard about it before we were suggested a trip there during my stay in Kumasi, and this is strange because this lake is exceptionally picturesque and definitely worth a visit.
It is the biggest natural lake in the country - with 10,5km diameter. Lake Volta in the east is the biggest, but it's manmade. Bosomtwe was most likely an impact crater, a result of a meteorite hitting the earth. On it's shores there are over 30 villages. However, we started off from Kumasi - the biggest city of Ashanti region and the second largest one in Ghana, I haven't really seen much of it, so I won't make a separate post about it - it looked very similar to Cape Coast and Accra.
Elmina is a little fishermen village by the ocean, just a few kilometers west from Cape Coast. It also has a white colonial castle similar to the one in Cape Coast and Osu and a very strong fishing tradition. It is said to be the first european settlement in West Africa. It is a perfect daytrip destination while staying in Cape!
Unfortunately, I had only one quick evening and saw most of it from a window of a car, but I would gladly recommend it and I wish I could spend some more time on wandering around there.
